A garage door that refuses to close is one of the most common home-repair calls placed every year, and it comes with a persistent myth attached: that something mechanical has broken. In the large majority of cases, nothing has broken at all. The door is doing exactly what it's designed to do — refusing to close because a safety sensor thinks something is in the way.

What the sensors are actually for

Since the 1990s, garage door openers have been required to include an auto-reverse safety system, most commonly a pair of photo-eye sensors mounted a few inches off the ground on either side of the door track, roughly facing each other. When the beam between them is broken, the opener assumes something — a person, a pet, a stray box — is in the door's path, and it refuses to close or reverses immediately if it's already moving. This is a genuine, important safety feature, and it's working correctly the overwhelming majority of the time it triggers. The problem is that a triggered sensor and a broken door look identical from the homeowner's side of the garage: the door just won't go down.

The usual suspects, in order of likelihood

Before assuming anything mechanical has failed, walk through these in order — most "broken door" calls resolve at the first or second item.

Misalignment. The two sensors need to be pointed directly at each other. A bump from a parked car, a stored bicycle, or even normal vibration over months can nudge one sensor's angle just enough to break the beam intermittently. Most units have a small indicator light on each sensor — usually solid when aligned, blinking or off when not. Checking that light is the fastest diagnostic in the entire process.

Dirt or debris on the lens. The sensors are small, low to the ground, and exactly where dust, spiderwebs, lawn clippings, and garage dust collect. A lens that's visibly hazy or has a cobweb across it can weaken the beam enough to cause intermittent failures, especially in bright sunlight when glare compounds the problem. Wiping both lenses with a soft, dry cloth resolves a surprising share of these calls.

Direct sunlight interference. Because the sensors work by detecting a beam of light, strong direct sunlight hitting one of them at a low morning or evening angle can occasionally wash out the signal, causing the door to refuse to close at a specific time of day and work fine the rest of the time. If the pattern is time-of-day specific, this is worth checking before anything else.

Something actually in the path. Sometimes the sensor is right. A stray toy, a garden hose looped across the track, or a shadow from something newly stored nearby can trigger a false-positive-that-isn't. Worth a genuine look before assuming the sensor itself is at fault.

Loose or damaged wiring. Less common but real — the low-voltage wire running from each sensor back to the opener unit can get pinched, chewed, or loosened over time, particularly in garages where the wire runs along the floor and gets stepped on or rolled over.

What to check yourself, safely

All of the above are checks any homeowner can perform without tools beyond a cloth and a flashlight: look at the indicator lights, wipe the lenses, realign the sensors so they face each other directly (loosening the mounting wingnut, adjusting the angle, and retightening), and clear anything from the door's path. None of this involves the door's springs, cables, or the opener's internal mechanism, all of which carry genuine mechanical risk and are worth leaving to a professional if something there is actually the issue.

Why this usually isn't a bigger problem than it looks

The reason this topic is worth understanding on its own is that a sensor issue and a genuine mechanical failure — a broken spring, a stripped gear, a failing opener motor — are entirely different categories of problem with entirely different costs and urgency, and they present to the homeowner in almost the same way: "the door won't close." A five-minute lens-and-alignment check resolves the sensor category outright. If the door still won't close after confirming both sensors are clean, aligned, and unobstructed, that's the point where it's reasonable to suspect something mechanical and worth a professional look — but that point comes later than most people assume, and a large share of "garage door repair" calls never needed to be one.

How to tell the two categories apart

There's a useful tell that separates a sensor issue from a mechanical one before you even touch anything: a sensor problem almost always lets the door open normally and only refuses to close, or reverses partway through closing. A genuine mechanical issue — a spring problem especially — tends to show up as the door struggling to open in the first place, moving unevenly, sagging visibly on one side, or making a loud bang or snap sound at some point. If opening is smooth and only closing is the problem, put your attention on the sensors first. If opening itself looks or sounds wrong, that's a different conversation, and one worth having with a professional rather than troubleshooting further, since spring and cable systems under tension carry real injury risk and aren't a homeowner repair regardless of how simple the fix might look.

A seasonal five-minute check

Because sensors sit low near the garage floor, they collect exactly the kind of dust, lawn debris, and cobwebs that accumulate over a season without anyone noticing. Wiping both lenses and confirming the indicator lights are solid takes less time than most other seasonal home checks, and it's worth doing at the same time as any other recurring maintenance routine — the start of fall is a reasonable anchor, since garage traffic and stored seasonal items both tend to shift around then, which is exactly the kind of disruption that knocks a sensor's alignment off by the few degrees it takes to start causing trouble.
