How Long Your Major Kitchen Appliances Should Really Last

Kitchen appliances don't come with a countdown timer, but they do come with reasonably predictable lifespans — and knowing roughly where each one sits on that timeline is the difference between budgeting calmly for a replacement and getting blindsided by one during a holiday week.
Refrigerators: The Long-Haul Appliance
A refrigerator is usually the longest-lived major kitchen appliance, with a typical lifespan in the range of 10 to 18 years depending on the model and how hard it's worked. Refrigerators run continuously, every hour of every day, which sounds like it should wear them out faster — but the components doing the heaviest lifting, particularly the compressor, are generally built for exactly that kind of continuous duty, and a well-maintained compressor is often the last thing to fail.
What actually shortens a refrigerator's life is usually airflow and heat management, not the compressor itself. Condenser coils that never get vacuumed collect dust and pet hair, which insulates them and forces the compressor to run longer and hotter than it should to maintain the same internal temperature. A refrigerator crammed against a wall with no clearance for its coils to vent heat ages faster than one with a few inches of breathing room, for the same underlying reason a person overheats faster in a closet than in an open room.
Dishwashers: The Shortest Realistic Window
Dishwashers tend to have the shortest realistic lifespan of the major kitchen appliances, often in the 8 to 12 year range. Between the pump, the heating element, the door seal, and the water inlet valve, a dishwasher has more moving parts exposed to water and detergent chemistry than almost anything else in the kitchen, and any one of them reaching end-of-life can end the unit's useful service even if the rest of the machine is fine.
Hard water is a particular accelerant here — mineral buildup on heating elements and spray arms reduces efficiency and can eventually cause components to fail early. Using the appropriate detergent and rinse aid, and not skipping the occasional cleaning cycle, meaningfully extends a dishwasher's realistic lifespan, even though it's easy to treat as an appliance that just runs itself.
Ranges and Ovens: The Slow Fade
Ranges and ovens, whether gas or electric, tend to be workhorses with lifespans commonly cited in the 13 to 20 year range for the range itself, though the truth is more nuanced than a single number suggests. A gas range's burners and igniters are relatively simple and durable, and many gas cooktops keep working reliably for decades with basic cleaning. Electric ranges depend more on heating elements and control boards, which introduces more potential failure points but doesn't necessarily shorten overall lifespan if those components are treated reasonably.
Ovens tend to fail — or start to fail — more subtly than other kitchen appliances. A thermostat that drifts out of calibration doesn't stop the oven from working; it just makes the oven quietly unreliable, running hotter or cooler than the dial says for months or years before anyone notices the cookies are consistently burning ten minutes early. That's a different kind of aging than a dishwasher pump seizing up — it's a slow fade rather than a hard stop, and it's worth periodically checking an oven's actual temperature against its setting with an inexpensive oven thermometer.
Microwaves: Built for a Shorter Life
Microwaves are the outlier in typical lifespan expectations, commonly running 7 to 10 years for a standard countertop or over-the-range unit — noticeably shorter than the other major kitchen appliances. Part of this comes down to build quality and cost engineering; microwaves are generally less expensive appliances relative to their kitchen counterparts, and the components inside — particularly the magnetron, which generates the microwave energy — aren't typically designed for the multi-decade service life expected of a refrigerator compressor.
Heavy daily use shortens a microwave's realistic lifespan more noticeably than it does for other appliances, since the magnetron has a genuinely finite duty-cycle rating that adds up faster in a household running it multiple times a day.
Reading the Signs: Fixable Glitch or End of the Road
The hardest part of appliance aging isn't the general lifespan ranges — it's figuring out, in the moment, whether a specific problem is a quick fix or the beginning of the end. A few patterns help sort one from the other.
A single new noise, error code, or performance dip that shows up once and doesn't repeat is often exactly that — a one-off, sometimes resolved by something as simple as a power cycle or an overloaded circuit tripping. A problem that repeats, especially one that gets worse over a few weeks, is a different story; that pattern usually indicates a component genuinely failing rather than a fluke.
Appliance age is the other half of the read. A control board issue on a three-year-old dishwasher is very likely worth repairing, since the rest of the machine still has years of expected service life ahead of it. The same control board issue on a twelve-year-old dishwasher is a much closer call, because even a successful repair doesn't reset the age of every other component quietly wearing down alongside it. Knowing roughly where an appliance sits on its expected lifespan curve is often the single most useful piece of information for deciding whether to call for a repair or start pricing a replacement.
