The Popping, Rumbling Water Heater: What the Noise Is Actually Telling You

Water heaters are supposed to be boring. They sit in a closet or a basement corner doing the same quiet job every day for a decade or more, and most homeowners never think about them until they announce themselves — usually with a noise nobody's heard before. The good news is that water heater sounds are actually one of the more decodable warning systems in the house. Each noise points toward a fairly specific cause, and knowing which is which is the difference between a Saturday-morning maintenance task and a flooded utility closet.

Popping and rumbling: sediment doing its work

The most common water heater noise, by a wide margin, is a popping or rumbling sound that builds as the tank heats up — sometimes described as sounding like a percolating coffee maker, or like gravel shifting inside the tank. This is sediment. Every water heater, over years of use, accumulates a layer of mineral sediment at the bottom of the tank as dissolved minerals in the water settle out of solution, and the rate at which this happens depends heavily on how hard the water supply is.

Here's the mechanism: the burner or heating element sits at or near the bottom of the tank, which is exactly where the sediment layer collects. As the water heats, it forms pockets of steam trapped underneath and inside that sediment layer, and those pockets pop and collapse as they escape upward through the sediment and the water above it — hence the popping and rumbling. It's not dangerous in the acute sense, but it is a sign of an inefficient system: the sediment layer acts as insulation between the burner and the water it's supposed to be heating, which means the unit has to work harder and longer to reach the same temperature, and that inefficiency shows up on the energy bill over time. It also accelerates wear on the tank itself in units where the burner runs hotter than it needs to in order to compensate.

The standard remedy is a full tank flush — draining the water heater completely through the drain valve near the bottom and letting fresh water run through until it comes out clear rather than cloudy or gritty. This is a maintenance task worth doing on a regular schedule rather than only after the popping starts, particularly in homes with hard water, but if you're already hearing it, that's your prompt.

Ticking: the sound of metal expanding

A lighter, more rhythmic ticking sound — distinct from the deeper pop of sediment — often comes from somewhere else entirely: thermal expansion in the pipes connected to the unit. As water heats, it expands slightly, and the pipe fittings, connectors, and sometimes the tank's own outer jacket expand and contract with the temperature swing, producing small ticking or clicking noises as metal parts shift against each other. This is generally the least concerning noise on this list. It's a byproduct of ordinary physics rather than a sign that anything is failing, and in most cases it doesn't require intervention beyond confirming that the noise really is consistent with heating cycles and not something else layered underneath it.

Screeching or whistling: a valve under pressure

A higher-pitched screeching, whistling, or whining sound is a different category of problem and deserves more attention than the popping or ticking. This sound typically points to water being forced through a restricted opening — most often a partially closed shutoff valve that isn't fully open, or, more seriously, a temperature and pressure relief valve (the T&P valve) that is either malfunctioning or responding to genuinely excessive pressure inside the tank.

The T&P valve exists specifically as a safety device: it's designed to open and release water if pressure or temperature inside the tank climbs beyond a safe threshold, preventing a much more dangerous outcome. A screeching sound associated with this valve, especially if it's accompanied by water discharging from the relief pipe that runs down the side of the unit, is not a sound to live with. It means the safety system is either actively doing its job because something upstream is wrong, or the valve itself is faulty and needs replacement. Either way, this is the one noise on this list that moves a homeowner from "schedule a maintenance visit" to "address this now, and don't run the unit until someone qualified has looked at it."

Banging or hammering: trapped air or a pressure spike

A sharp banging noise, sometimes called water hammer, usually isn't the tank itself but the plumbing system reacting to a sudden change in water flow — often when a valve elsewhere in the house closes quickly, like a washing machine solenoid valve, and the moving water column slams to a stop against a closed pipe. It can also result from trapped air in the lines. This is more of a whole-house plumbing issue than a water-heater-specific one, but because it's frequently loudest near the unit, homeowners often (understandably) blame the water heater first. Persistent hammering is worth mentioning to whoever services the system, since over time it can loosen fittings and stress connections.

Where the line is

As a general rule: sounds tied to a normal heating cycle — popping, rumbling, gentle ticking — are maintenance-category noises. Get them checked at a normal service interval, and treat popping specifically as a nudge to schedule a tank flush sooner rather than later. Sounds tied to a safety component — screeching from a relief valve, hissing that suggests an active leak, or any noise paired with visible water discharge, scorching, or a burning smell — cross the line into "turn it off and call someone now" territory. The tank itself is a sealed pressure vessel sitting on a heat source; it earns a little extra caution compared to, say, a noisy dishwasher. Learning to tell the difference between an inefficient tank clearing its throat and a safety valve doing its job is a small skill that pays for itself the first time it saves you from ignoring the wrong noise.
